My Cherry Prinsepia (Prinsepia sinensis) has always been the first plant to leaf out in the spring. This could be bad in some climates as this advantage allows it to out complete other vegetation for resources.

Or perhaps it acts more like a woodland ephemeral and is getting leaves out before the canopy fills in for the summer.
